How Colon Cleanses Work

Colon Cleansing is the process of removing excess build up in the colon so the body can more effectively remove waste. Most colon cleanses work in similar ways.

Fiber

A massive amount of fiber is a key ingredient in every cleanser. There are two types, soluble and insoluble. Both are undigested and both allow waste to pass through the colon easily.

Soluble fiber binds with fat and absorbs water, forming a gel-like substance that is easy to pass. It also helps you feel full longer after you eat.

Insoluble fiber remains unchanged and help to push bulk through the intestines. It speeds up bowel movements and helps regulate bacteria.

Psyillium seed husks contain high levels of both types of fiber, and are therefore a main ingredient of colon cleanses, and also make up some of mainstream fiber supplements like Metamucil.

The soluble fiber in the psyillium husks absorb water and expand, filling up the total width of the colon. The insoluble fiber then helps move this expanded bulk, scraping along the inside colonic wall and taking excess waste with it.

Other Natural Herbs

While the fiber does much of the work involved, there are also other ingredients that help with other issues. These typically help enhance the absorption capacity of the psyillium bulk and pick up other toxins that would otherwise be left behind to fester.

Other herbs are included to help with the temporary discomfort a colon cleanse can sometimes cause. For example, fennel can help with gas and bloating, and Buckthorn is said to aid in the regeneration of healthy mucous that is expelled by the cleanse.
